History of Camp Kohler and the Western Signal Corps School in Northern California. What do a migrant worker camp, a Japanese American assembly center, an Army Signal Corps training center, a prisoner of war branch camp, an Army Air Corps overseas replacement depot, an Army branch port of embarkation, and Walerga engineer depot have in common? They were all located on the same property as Camp Kohler, California. The Army land holdings in Sacramento County would grow from a 160-acre tract in1942 to over some 3,800 acres at its high point in 1944. Most of the land was leased throughout its history and returned to its owners starting in 1946 when no longer needed by the Army.
Danny M. Johnson worked as a civilian on three Department of the Army staffs at the Pentagon; as a Command Historian for the US Army Information Systems Command, Fort Huachuca, AZ; and as a Command Historian for HQ 5th Signal Command, Mannheim, Germany. In April 2003, he traveled to Iraq to document the Signal Corps involvement in the US invasion. The Signal Corps Regimental Association awarded him the Bronze Order of Mercury before he retired as a Department of the Army Civilian in October 2004 after 35 years of service. With 25 years of service in the Regular Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve, Johnson retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in October 2006. As a private military scholar, Danny M. Johnson has made numerous contributions to On Point, The Journal of Army History, and numerous other professional military historical publications. He specializes in World War II; Old Posts, Camps and Stations; unit history; and Army heraldic insignia, some of which he helped to design. He has authored Military Communications Supporting Peacekeeping Operations in the Balkans (2000) and edited The European Signal Corps Order of Battle (2001). He has also contributed numerous inserts to The Oxford Companion to Military History (2001), the Army Lineage Series book, Signal Corps (2005), and Military Communications from Ancient Times to the 21st Century (2007). He currently resides in Sacramento, California.
