Andrew Avelar is saddened by the sudden death of his great-grandfather, Guadalupe Robert Avelar. During the will reading, he inherits a journal which contains something so shocking, that neither he nor his family will be willing to understand. His great-grandfather's life as a cartoonist has been a huge cover-up. His great-grandparents were one of the greatest treasure hunters who ever lived. In the journal, he is sworn not to tell anyone about his real occupation.

One week later, the truth of the journal's contents is revealed with his U.S. history teacher who happens to read it. Determined to get the journal away from Andy and his family, the teacher is shot and killed by hulking assassin who is determined to steal the journal for his boss. With the help of his best friend, his bratty sister, a museum tour guide, and two detectives, they are now on the race to beat Richard Burke and find the treasure before he does. The hunt for the treasure becomes a perilous journey as they are trailed by the police, mercenaries, and Richard's personal assistants.
