The 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates turned in one of the most remarkable performances in sports history by coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series, the franchise's fifth all-time championship. They were led by team captain Willie Stargell, big swinging right fielder Dave Parker, speedy base thief Omar Moreno, and relief pitcher Kent Tekulve, but got timely contributions from nearly every member of the roster in doing whatever it took to fight and claw their way back into the series with a Game 5 victory at Three Rivers Stadium and then take the final two games on the road in Baltimore. Their penchant for the dramatic and their all hands on deck approach to winning showed that the '79 Bucs were more than just a championship baseball club; they were a "Family" in the truest sense of the word.
Jason Zemcik is a lifelong Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins fan who was born and raised in Somerset, PA. He saw his first Pirates game, a 5-2 win over the Cardinals at Three Rivers Stadium, in 1989 at age seven and was immediately hooked. In addition to this book, his fifth, he has also written about the Pittsburgh Penguins 2016 Stanley Cup championship in PENSational: How The 2015-16 Pittsburgh Penguins Captivated an Entire City on Their Way to Winning the Stanley Cup and the start of a collegiate summer league baseball team in Leadoff Hit: Inside the Inaugural Season of the Holly Springs Salamanders. His writing has also been featured on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette website, CityofChampionsSports.com, and MLBCenter.com. He resides near Raleigh, NC with his wife and daughter.
