This book contains a wealth of information pertaining to African Americans in St. Francois County, Missouri, 1822-1920. The information was transcribed from a variety of documents, including court records, emancipation records, wills, bonds, inventories, appraisements, and sale bills, which provide a rich source of names, dates and related data. The largest portion of the book is devoted to transcripts of St. Louis Argus newspaper articles, which offer varying amounts of biographical details. Transcribed articles may contain any combination of the following: full name(s), date of birth, place of birth, date of marriage, place of marriage, date of death, place of death, cause of death, death certificate number, date of burial, and place of burial. The articles cover social engagements, visiting friends, social engagements, illness, deaths and more -- an excellent source of relationship data, often listing the full names of spouse, children, parents, other relatives, and/or friends. Chapters include: Civil Circuit Court Records Indexes (03 Nov. 1845 to 16 May 1863); Emancipation Records -- Slave Records Box 5 File 175; Bonds and Wills, Volume A1: 1822-1852; Wills Volume 1: 1853-1890; Inventories, Appraisements, and Sale Bills, Volume 1: 1855-1866; and, St. Louis Argus Newspaper Extracts, 1915-1920, with Commentary.
